Overcoming the Torment of Acne
by Beau Kowan

No one likes acne. Names like "crater face" and "pizza face"
have haunted more than just a few people. Yet acne is a
common problem.
Eight out of ten people will suffer from acne, most
frequently during their teen years. But acne can strike at
any age, and many adults struggle with it as well. Most
often appearing on the face, acne can erupt anywhere you
have skin, frequently affecting the shoulders, back, and
chest.
Acne can sometimes be very painful and it can also leave
scars. The scarring is a common problem for many people.
When they finally get over the trauma of the acne, they may
be left not with beautiful and clear skin but with scars.
What Causes Acne?
People can experience outbreaks of acne anywhere that they
have skin. There are also many theories about why people get
acne. Many of these theories are myths such as the chocolate
myth. The biggest causes of acne are hormone changes and/or
excess oil produced in the skin.
Certain hormones called androgens help aid in the production
of oil. Oil that blocks the pores gets dirt trapped in it
and leads to pimples or blackheads. If you have greasy hair
that touches your face, that can contribute to acne.
Your heredity plays a part, too, as does your personal
hygiene. While you can't do anything about your genes,
simply washing your face regularly can be a big help. Pay
special attention to removing makeup and to washing after
activities that cause a lot of sweating.
Acne Treatments and Prevention
Today there are many treatment approaches, available in both
over-the-counter preparations and by prescription. If the
readily available ones aren't helping, see a doctor because
some of the newer treatements are proving wonderfully
effective.
There are many different home remedies or "natural"
treatments for acne as well. But your best option is to try
to prevent it as much as possible. While you can't always
prevent acne 100%, you can cut down on the things that
contribute to it. And by doing this, you decrease your acne
or chances of acne.
You should also get your acne in control. If you have severe
acne that is not being helped by over the counter
treatments, then you should see your doctor for advice.
Cutting down on the number of outbreaks can also help you
prevent acne scarring.
