Information Technology For Everyday People
by Trey Aldrich

Almost everyone uses a computer on a daily basis. But just
because you spend time in front of a computer does not mean
you are an expert in information technology. However, the
issues of computer security are something that most people,
especially frequent computer users, should take an interest
in.
We live in an age of high tech and the world is continually
getting smaller, thanks to the Internet. Security and
privacy both on and offline are more important than ever
with all of our smart cards, digital identification. Things
we do everyday help circulate our personal information to
places we don~t even think about. Filling out online forms,
giving out our email and home addresses and phone numbers,
entering local contests, all serve to get our identities
out in the world and into databases. The truth is we may
not know the owner of the database or even be able to
legally access it. We all need to start paying attention to
ways of keeping us more secure and our privacy less
invaded.
To begin with, you should at least have virus protection
and spy ware protection on your computer. Viruses and spy
ware are two most common culprits in the information theft
~industry~. Identity thieves around the world use viruses
and spy ware to get all forms of information, from computer
users located throughout the world. Viruses and spy ware
make it possible to steal your personal details information
such as name, phone number, street address, and more. Not
only is your personal information at stake, but your
financial information could be compromised as well. Have
you ever made a purchase online using your credit card?
If so, your credit card information may be stored in files
on your computer, and these files can be pillaged by
this spy ware and virus code. This is why it is so
important for everyone to use virus protection and spy ware
protection at all times when using the Internet.
Another item that is commonly overlooked is the
humble firewall. Firewalls come in the form of
hardware and software and should be used on any
broadband internet connection. Some folks in the
security industry even suggest running firewall software
no matter what type of internet connection you have,
even dial up.
The best protection from virus or malware invasion is
knowing the enemy. We must all be responsible for our own
computers and learn all we can about any threats. Two good
examples are to know not to download anything from a site
you aren~t familiar with, and to not ever open email
attachments from strange addresses. You should even scan
any attachments from friends or relatives as they may
unwittingly pass a virus on. Your computer may be clean but
maybe theirs isn~t.
With a little caution, and a bit of patience, anyone, no
matter what their skill level with computers can have a
safe and secure online experience.
