Houses and Their Architectural Styles
by Jordan Etheridge

There are many different house styles and designs
that have stood strong through the years and have
gained popularity over time. Many of these house
styles were first built years ago and are unique to
the location where there were built as well as the
date that they were built. Many new houses today
are styled after some of these house styles which
include: houses in the Cape Cod style, Spanish-
Mediterranean homes, Greek Revival houses, Tudor
homes, and French style homes.

Built in the late seventeenth century in the state of
New England, the Cape Cod house is still as
popular now as it was then. The house was
originally designed to commemorate the Colonial
Revival homes of the time but it soon gained its
own reputation. The Cape Cod house is distinct
with its wooden structure and its gabled, steep roof.
The symmetrical flooring plans make it popular
among home owners and in later years chimneys
were added to one, or both, ends of the house to
keep in warm during New England winters.

The Spanish-Mediterranean houses become popular
in the 1800~s when they were first built. These
houses have a roof that is low, flat, and made of red
tiles, and an exterior that is made of stucco to keep
the cool in and the heat of the day out. This house
style is often seen in the Southern states of America,
especially in California.

The Greek Revival style house is still very popular
due to the boldness of the front of the home. A
large porch will usually run the length of the front
of the house, with huge columns running to the roof
to create a feeling of austerity. The Greek Revival
house was a take off from the Greek homes in
Southern Europe and was first built in the United
States in the city of Philadelphia.

The influence of Great Britain is also present in
many of the houses built today. The Tudor house, a
reflection of homes in Great Britain during the
Medieval era, is usually built of dark wood beams
on the upper portion of the home, with brick on the
lower half. These homes will have one or more
chimneys that highlight at least one room and the
top floors will feature multi gables. You~ll find the
Tudor home built in many neighborhoods that are
upper class in mainly Anglophile areas of the city.

Still one more house style that is still popular today
is the French style house. Homes that have a
French influence will have a lot of small details that
other house styles don~t have, such as facades made
of blocks that are interlocking, shutters, and
windows that are multi-paned. The inside of these
French style homes are traditional and simple,
featuring a kitchen, living room, and dining room
on the main floor, with bedrooms on the upper
floors.

House designs are changing each year, with
additions and alterations being made to the many
traditional architecture styles that have been so
successful over the years. Architects continue to
come up with modern designs all the time but the
traditional house remains.
