Choosing a Bible
by Gene van Onstan

Not that long ago, it was simple to buy a Bible for your
family. If you didn~t have one that was passed down through
the generations of your family, you could simply go to a
nearby store and pick one up.

But finding a Bible is a little more complicated these
days. Of course you can find Bibles at Christian
bookstores or even large book seller chains. But nowadays,
you have such a large selection of Bibles to choose from it
can be a little confusing. What are the differences
between all these Bible versions ~ do they teach the same
lessons? Which one should you buy?

Most of today~s English Bibles descend from the 1611
edition authorized for translation from the original Hebrew
and Greek manuscripts by England~s King James. Although
earlier English Bibles had been available since the
previous century, James~ was the first widespread
translation that relied on the help of numerous scholars of
the day.

This version of the Bible became so popular that it was
used by most churches and continues to be used in the
majority of Protestant churches throughout the world today.
Although there were other translations throughout the
centuries, it wasn~t until the 20th century that modern day
translations gained popularity. As a result, there are
literally dozens of versions of the Bible to choose from.

The King James version (KJV) of the Bible is translated
into 17th century English, which means it can be difficult
for 21st century readers to understand. Expressions like
~Abraham begot Isaac~ and ~Go to~ (as in ~here, now!~) seem
oddly out of place with conventional Bible teachings, yet
most pastors and readers manage to get most of the meaning
with the help of study notes in some editions.

There is a version that is somewhat easier to decipher, the
New King James version (NKJV). This uses some current day
expressions while still keeping the same general tone of
the original translation. The New International Version
(NIV) is another popular version is that is widely
available in many countries. This version is a little more
contemporary in its translation ~ the language is often
easier to read and interpret than the earlier James
versions.

One of the most current versions is the New American
Standard version (NAS). This version is moderately popular
with today~s Bible readers. This style of the Bible uses
word choices or phrases that are more typically American
than some of the previous versions.

These versions and others, like the Good News Bible or The
Word, closely follow original manuscripts in an effort to
maintain accuracy and preserve the intended meaning. Ask
your bookstore attendant for help in finding the best Bible
for your individual use.
