Cruise Tips for First Timers

You want your vacation to be a dizzying whirl of fun and
adventure with tours and activities to keep you busy from
morning till the wee hours of the next morning. Your husband
longs for long, lazy afternoons by the pool, with a round or
two of golf thrown in to break up the luxury of having no
schedule. Can one vacation accomodate you both?

Absolutely! Cruise vacations offer such a variety of choices
in styles, ships, destinations and activities that it's
possible for you both to take the same cruise - and each
have exactly the vacation you want. If a cruise is on your
list of possible vacations, here's a handful of tips from
experienced cruisers to help you choose the right trip for
you.

Choose the Cruise That Suits You Best Choices, choices,
choices! Does vacation mean excitement in your mind? A sea
cruise on a luxury liner to an exotic destination is the
perfect choice. Large luxury liners are like self-contained
floating resorts. They offer sparkling entertainment day and
night, and a wide range of leisure choices to suit anyone's
idea of fun.

Or maybe you'd prefer a cozier trip on a smaller ship. River
cruises give you a chance to get to know your fellow
passengers better, and offer a close-up view of the culture
of your destination. Riverboats can offer all the luxury of
an enormous ocean liner without the frenetic busy-ness that
can be overwhelming if all you want is relaxation.

River tours down one of the major rivers in Europe, Asia or
the United States can give you a comfortable home base while
you explore towns and cities along the way. On board ship,
you can relax by the pool, dine at the Captain's table,
enjoy dancing and entertainment and join in on ship board
activities.

A luxury ocean liner offers far different choices. With
spas, gyms, pools, restaurants and casinos, there's always
something to do. Challenge your kids to a race to the top of
the rock-climbing wall in the fitness club, or dig in at a
make-your-own sundae bar - there's far more available than
you'll possibly be able to fit into one short cruise.

Not sure what to pack? For any cruise, pack lots of casual
clothes that can be layered to account for any type of
weather. For a river cruise, at least one dressy outfit for
the Captain's reception. For ocean cruises, pack more!

Invest in cruise insurance. Cruise insurance will pay the
cost of your cruise if unforseen circumstances cause you to
cancel at the last minute. The price of the premium is a
small expense compared to losing thousands of dollars if a
family emergency forces you to cancel your plans.

Planning to take pictures? Stock up on batteries and film
before you leave. The prices abroad are high. You might also
consider packing several disposable cameras for shore trips.

If you're planning to bring back lots of souvenirs (and who
doesn't?) roll up a collapsible duffle bag and tuck it into
your suitcase for the trip out. You'll be grateful for the
extra packing space on the return trip.
