Internet Dating 101 - 5 Great Places for a First Date
by Yaron Rawlings

So you got talked into joining one of those internet dating
sites. It was a little embarrassing at first, but hey! Busy
as you are, it was hard to get out and meet someone new. You
polished up a profile, posted a photo and - wonder of
wonders - you met someone that seems like just the kind of
girl you want to know better. Where do you go from here?

Blind dates have always been tricky, but the Internet has
thrown some new monkey wrenches into the mix. You don't
necessarily have a friend to introduce you or play buffer.
Without the restrictions of space, you can meet someone from
the other side of the country as easily as you can someone
from the other side of town. That can make meeting a puzzle
of logistics that will challenge any Einstein.

Frankly, if the person that you've met is traveling a long
distance for this meeting, you may be tempted to skimp on
the safety precautions. Don't. In fact, you should be
especially careful with a long distance meeting, whether
it's you that's done the traveling or your date. It's far
easier to get away with 'bad intentions' when either victim
or perpetrator are far from home. No matter how far-fetched
it seems, keep safety first when you meet that special
heart-throb for the first time.

Here are five suggestions for places that are both safe and
fun for a first time meeting and date.

Base your meeting on something you have in common. If the
two of you met in an internet chat room devoted to jazz,
that new jazz club you've been meaning to check out could be
the perfect place to meet for the first time. An afternoon
at a comic book convention might be a good first meeting
date if you're both DC fans. The basic idea is to find a
place where you know you'll both have fun together even if
the sparks don't fly when you meet face to face. At worst,
you'll still have an interesting afternoon.

A Museum or Gallery Opening Is there an exhibit coming up
that you know she'd love? Invite her to meet you there.
There's plenty of time to chat as you wander the exhibits
together. You'll find the pressure of 'dating small talk' is
almost non-existent when you have a ready built topic for
conversation.

Meet at the Borders - Book Store, That Is Bookstores are
underrated as great places to meet someone you're looking
forward to getting to know. It meets the safety requirement
of being big and public and still offers a lot of privacy
for quiet talk. A local bookstore/cafe combo lets you wander
the aisles together, letting books spark conversation, then
find a cozy little table to share a coffee and dessert while
you get to know each other better.

Always have a Plan B. No matter how careful your planning
was, sometimes the unexpected happens and interferes. If
your reservations for dinner got canceled or the show was
sold out, having a Plan B in reserve can keep things running
smooth. Better yet, have two or three Plan B's to pick from
if Plan A doesn't work out.

Take a Mall Stroll Take a dating tip from the high school
generation. Meeting at the mall is non-threatening, and
gives you dozens of options for things to do. One of my
favorites? A trip down the aisles of KayBee Toys. It's hard
to be nervous when the guy you're meeting is playing with a
Slinky.

Wherever you decide to meet, keep these safety rules in mind
- and yes, they apply to guys as well as girls. 1. Always
Meet In A Public Place 2. Make Sure That Someone Knows Where
You Are 3. Arrange to Make Check-In Calls With Someone Every
Few Hours You can have a wonderful time with someone you
meet for the first time - but keep safety first.
