Understanding Surveillance Technology

The technology of surveillance equipment is continuing to
advance at a very rapid pace. As a result surveillance
equipment has become almost ubiquitous in retail stores,
public schools, gas stations, and airport terminals all
across the United States. There is a wide range of
surveillance technology that is available on the market.
Surveillance equipment ranges from wiretapping phone and
internet based equipment to high tech facial feature
recognition computer software known as biometrics.
Surveillance equipment makes the world infinitely more
manageable for people who need to protect their belongings
and protect people and make its far more difficult for
people who actually want to commit crime. As more of the
high-tech surveillance equipment becomes more and more
easily available to the general public and small business
owners, more and more people will reap the benefits.
People want to protect their homes and business from being
a victim of a crime, and having surveillance technology is
an excellent way to do that. It is doubtful a criminal will
break into a home or rob a store if they know they are
being filmed on a camera that tells authorities what they
look like. They will pick a place that has no cameras
first. Surveillance cameras can not pick up everything that
goes on but, in the event someone does still commit a
crime at a facility that has surveillance technology it
will be easier for the police to identify and arrest the
perpetrator.
Surveillance equipment still works in the original way it
was intended since it was first introduced to us i.e it is
still used to try and prevent crimes. A lot of small
businesses that can~t afford to install a real security
system uses dummy cameras to try and discourage a thief
from committing a crime on there premises. Although they
don~t record anything, no one really knows for sure if
these cameras are real or not therefore, they do help some
in the prevention of a crime.
Warehouses and stores have installed surveillance to
prevent the theft of their merchandise. Normally a thief
will come from outside of the company to try and steal some
type of merchandise; these people can be caught in the act
on the tape and turned over to the police. Occasionally
someone from inside the company will try and steal
something, in which case the company policies for this
action will take effect. This of course usually means the
thief is left unemployed.
Shopping malls, parking garages, office buildings,
financial intuitions, almost every where we go we will find
surveillance equipment lurking around. This is so
businesses can protect their merchandise from being stolen
or at the very least catch and prosecute someone who does
commit a crime. It doesn~t matter to the camera if you are
an employee of the company or not, if you do the crime you
will be recorded. By slowing down the crime rate and
prosecuting ones who do commit crimes, companies can
protect their merchandise from missing, which can help keep
prices lower for consumers.
