GETTING READY FOR SURGERY
by Wendell James

Surgery of any kind is scary. If you think about going to
sleep, having a doctor make an incision, and then the
recovery portion, it is a very unnerving thought.
Regardless if having your tonsils out or open heart
surgery, feeling uncomfortable about the experience is
perfectly normal. To ensure you have a safe and smooth
surgery, you do have some options.
How do you make sure you are satisfied with the surgeon
you will have? You need to be 100% at ease so make sure
you~ve conducted thorough research. Check that your
surgeon is board certified and make sure that they have an
excellent status. You can achieve this by making sure they
have a license, chat to past patients, talk to other
doctors and nurses in the establishment and ask as many
things as you want. Your body is your body and you have a
right and a responsibility to yourself to choose the
correct surgeon.
Chances are weeks before surgery, you will begin to feel a
little apprehensive. First, you need to understand that
you are not alone with this emotion. If you were not
nervous, then that would be something out of the norm.
Surgery of any kind is a stressful experience. Remember,
in addition to you feeling this way, your family is also
having to deal with the idea of you going under the knife.
How can you reduce the strain on yourself? Never be scared
to have multiple discussions with your doctor and you
should never feel silly picking up the phone and calling
them if some burning question has just popped into your
head. You need to find a doctor that will return the call
personally or get on of their nurses to do it. If they
dismiss you and can~t be bothered, go find another one.
Are you worried about your pets and children? Don~t be! We
can all think the worst and wonder what will happen to
them if something goes drastically awry, but you just have
to drum it into your head that the surgeon has years of
experience and everything will go fine. If you make sure
you have a relative or friend waiting in the wings to take
control this should help you to keep calm.
How prepared should I be? Planning ahead is they key to
maintaining a level head. Go shopping for things you will
need whilst in hospital two weeks before the day of
surgery. Also, don~t create more stress by packing the
night before. Pack a week before then you~ll have time to
make sure you~re taking everything you want and that you
won~t leave any items behind.
If you have children at home that will go to stay with
family or friend, you will need to talk honestly with
them. While you do not need to go into detail unless they
are older, let them know where you will be, who will be
caring for them in your absence, and when you will be
home, emphasizing that you will be home. Most children do
quite well and if they know, they can come see you at the
hospital that will eliminate some of their fear. Remember,
good planning, good communication, and a good doctor make
for a successful surgery.
