The Canadian Basketball Connection
by Everett Gilbreth

Basketball was invented in 1891 by a man named
Dr. James Naismith. Naismith was born in Ramsay,
Ontario in 1861. He developed the concept for the
game of basketball from his school days, when he
played a children~s game that was known as ~duck
on a rock~. The goal of this children~s game was to
knock the ~duck~, which was placed on a larger
rock, by throwing smaller rocks at it. After a
childhood spent in Ramsay, Naismith attended
McGill University in Montreal, Quebec.

Naismith left McGill in 1981 after becoming
Athletic Director. He used these skills to find
employment at the YMCA Training School in
Massachusetts. It was here that Naismith created
the game of basketball. The winters in
Massachusetts were harsh and cold, and so
Naismith developed a game that could be played
indoors and in a relatively small space. He wanted
this new game to require skill, but not necessarily
strength. This way everyone at the School of
Christian Workers would be able to take part.

The very first variations of basketball were played
using a soccer ball instead of a basketball, and
wooden peach baskets as the goals. To go along
with the ball and the baskets, Naismith developed
some basic rules so that there would be no question
of how the game was played.

Some of the original rules included players may not
run with the ball, the ball must be thrown from
where they were standing. Another rule was that
the ball must be thrown with one or both hands and
players were not permitted to hit the ball with their
fists.

Yet another rule of the game was that players could
not push, hold, trip, or shoulder another player. A
foul would result if any of these actions were
applied and if the player received two fouls he was
out of the game until another goal was made. This
rule ensured that players of the game played fairly
and without violence.

Only one year later in 1982 and officials set of rules
were released that deviated only slightly from
Naismith~s original rules. The popularity of
basketball today can be seen in the many countries
that it is played in and the number of fans that are
passionate about the game.
