VISIT LONDON
by Ramon Inglaterra

London is stuffed full of history and old buildings,
right? True, but that~s not all that London~s about. It~s
actually a pretty happening place full to the brim with
well over 300 museums, 200 art galleries and 150 things
happening every single day. You could say that it~s pretty
much on a par with New York, another one of those cities
awake 24/7.
London is so vast that there are plenty of amazing things
to do and see no matter how young or old you are. You
should always visit the magnificent Buckingham Palace and
you should never miss the Changing of the Guards there,
either.
The guarding of these palaces dates back to 1660. For
example, the Palace of Whitehall was the primary residence
in London by the Royal family until the late 1600s.
Because of that, this palace was heavily guarded by the
Household Calvary. Today, the guards still stand erect
and alert, holding the position. The Changing of the
Guard has a long history and something you do not want to
miss when visiting London.
The red tunics and bearskin hats are so regal. The
ceremony lasts 45 minutes during which time the old guard
is replaced by the new guard. While it might not sound
like much, this is quite a big deal and actually beautiful
to watch. Each movement of the guards is done with a kind
of poetic precision. Every day at 11:30 a.m., you can
watch this event!
If you expect to tour London, be sure you see Windsor
Castle. Build over 900 years ago this particular castle
was constructed to defend the western approach. Because
this castle is actually among the official residences of
the Queen, today many official and State events take place
there. The changing of the guard here is magnificent, as
each stoic guard makes his way toward the castle, walking
through the town. Whenever the Queen is in the castle, the
guards are followed by a band. When the Queen is gone, the
guards make their way on mount.
London is quite beautiful, making a lovely destination.
You can choose a guided or private tour of the city and
countryside or if you prefer, enjoy a helicopter or coach
tour. Other options for enjoying London include walking
tours, a cruise on the Thames River, a rail tour, steam
train day trip, and more.
