Computer Skills for Seniors
by Scott Adkinson
http://www.fafacomputer.com

Many seniors have little or not experience with the
computer which makes them feel intimidated when
faced with having to use one. This fear and lack of
experience shouldn~t be a deterrent when it comes
to seniors using computers since the computer is a
great tool for them to learn to use for a variety of
reasons.

Keeping in touch with family and friends is made
much easier with a computer. Through the use of e-
mail and chat rooms we can share pictures and
information with people across the world. For
many seniors once they learn how to use email they
can~t believe they never got along without it.
People who they only kept in contact with once or
twice a year, they can now speak with as often as
they please. Everyone loves the convenience of e-
mail since it can be done on your own time.

The computer is also a good way to keep seniors
feeling young. Mastering a new skill at any age is
important since it makes people feel a sense of
accomplishment while at the same time keeping
them young. Once seniors learn how to move
around on the computer and use the Internet they~ll
be off surfing in no time. Using the Internet is a
good way for people of all ages to find information
about their favorite hobbies, gather new recipes, and
plan their next vacation.

When looking for a computer system for a senior
typically they don~t need anything fancy. Since
they won~t be doing any computer programming or
graphic work, a basic machine with a little power is
all they need. Be sure to get a large screen monitor
and a printer. Seniors might also enjoy having a
digital camera to take on that vacation, or a scanner
so they can store and share all their old
photographs.

If seniors are having problems learning basic
computer skills getting them enrolled in a course at
the local community or retirement center is a great
idea. These classes move at a fairly slow pace and
are taught by professionals who are patient and can
explain concepts clearly. If you are helping a senior
learn how to use a computer be patient since it may
take them some time.

Any senior will benefit from learning how to use a
computer. It allows them to feel in control,
independent, and proud of themselves for learning
something new. If you know a senior who would
like to learn about computers don~t hesitate to give
them a hand and encourage them.
