The importance of a well balanced diet is very important.
The goal of this article is to answer the questions you
may have about a well balanced diet.
A balanced diet is vital. An unbalanced diet can result in
illness and even death. For this reason we must be sure to
eat a variety of foods, but it is not that simple. One
must eat an appropriate amount of each food and be certain
that they are receiving the nutrients that their body
needs. The questions then are how to eat a balanced diet,
and what nutrients does the body require.
Carbohydrate is comprised of carbo-carbon, -hydro-hydrogen
and ate-oxygen. Carbohydrate is considered the most
important source of energy. Our body gets most of the
carbohydrates in the form of starch. Our digestive system
converts this starch into glucose as our body cannot
directly utilize starch. Rich sources of starch are
potato, rice, spaghetti, yams, bread and cereals. The
sugar that we take is another form of carbohydrate called
sucrose. It also has to be converted into glucose before
it can be absorbed by our body.
Carbohydrates are nutrients which contain hydrogen, carbon,
and oxygen. They are the source of most of our body's
energy. Carbohydrates are usually in the form of starches
which our body converts to glucose. Potatoes, rice, and
bread are all good sources of carbohydrates.
Our body can also use proteins as a source of energy. When
excess amino acids are removed from the body, the Nitrogen
gets excreted in the form of urea. It is the liver that
makes the urea which is then put into our urine by the
kidney. Lean meat, eggs, fish, beans are a few rich
sources of proteins.
Vitamins are required by the body but the body does not
produce its own vitamins. Therefore we must obtain
vitamins through outside sources such as food and
supplements. Although the body can survive for a certain
amount o time without vitamins certain diseases and even
death can result from a pro longed vitamin deficiency. The
body requires small amounts of vitamin A, B, C, D, and E.
Our body requires mineral salts in traces, although, the
requirement of mineral salts in our body is much more than
that of vitamins. Mineral salts consists of iron, required
to make hemoglobin, calcium, required for healthy teeth,
bones and muscles; sodium, required by every cell
especially nerve cells and iodine used to make the hormone
called thyroxin.
It is also called roughage. It helps the body to have
proper bowel movement. Our body cannot digest roughage.
The food moves through the digestive tract through the
process of peristalsis. Roughage helps in this movement.
Patents of constipation can benefit very much from roughage
Water is maybe the most important part of a balanced diet
even though it has no nutrimental value. The number one
cause of hospitalization every year is dehydration. This
is because every function performed by the body requires
water. The normal adult should consume at least eight
glasses of water every day. This will ensure proper
hydration unless the person is overly active or exposed to
extreme temperatures.
Eating the correct amounts of all these foods will result
in a healthy life. Lack of them or too much of them can be
dangerous and even deadly. Maintain a well balanced diet
for good health. While eating a balanced diet may seem
difficult and one may feel deprived the reward of a long
and healthy life are well worth the effort. Choose a long
life over a life full of fat and oils.
