PICKING CHARITIES
by Todd Marshall

People around the globe are not as fortunate as us. That
is why we donate to charities, to help the needy.
Charities are set up to help all manner of causes and
natural catastrophes, big or small. One recent example is
charities for the tsunami that recently wrecked tens of
thousands of people~s lives. Charities will help villages
and families to reconstruct their lives and homes; without
them this just wouldn~t be achievable. But just how do you
decide which to give to? Here are some tips and
suggestions.
We can imagine that the niggling thought at the forefront
of your mind is will my money be put to good use and go to
the people that require it? Well that depends on the
charity or charities you choose. There are a few
unscrupulous ones where businessmen donate the money to
themselves, but fortunately these are few and far between.
Most are governed by empathetic people who have a burning
desire to help the less fortunate. Just take time to
choose charities and don~t hesitate to find out just how
much of each dollar goes to the cause, not to the charity.
What about the World Vision International? This
Californian charity doesn~t make any profit and is a
Christian organization that focuses on the world~s
neediest kids. Its reputation speaks for itself and is one
of the fantastic charities to donate to. The money is used
to clothe, feed and educate children in poverty. This
education aspect is of paramount importance as it will
help them to get a job and look after themselves; they may
even end up helping other kids in the same situation when
they grow up. World Vision International also helps in
naturally occurring disasters such as the Tsunami.
The Red Cross is another excellent charitable
organization. Most people have heard of Red Cross, very
much aware of the type of excellent support they offer.
You will see the professionals of the Red Cross working
situations associated with natural disasters to include
hurricanes, tornadoes, floods, and yes, tsunami. These
people step up to the plate in bringing food, clothing,
medication, personnel, education, and financial means to
help in a specific situation.
These are two of the best charities around but that
doesn~t mean that there aren~t a plethora of other
first-rate charities calling out for your $10 a month
donation. This includes Feed the Children, The Salvation
Army, The United Way, Greenpeace and Ronald McDonald
House. It~s up to you which one you choose; just don~t
forget to make donations as you never know where the next
disaster zone will be. It could be in your home town and
you could be the one desperately seeking the help of
charities.
