Inventions and Where They Come From
by Robert Gettig

There are many famous inventions that everyone
knows about, such as the telegraph that was
invented by Samuel Morse or the phonograph that
was invented by Thomas Edison. But what about
other inventions that make our lives more
convenient and enjoyable? There are many
inventions that we use each day without ever being
aware of their beginnings.

One the more obscure inventions that we use every
day are the mouse that is attached to the keyboard
of your computer. The computer mouse was
developed by a man named Douglas Engelbart in
1964. Engelbart was looking for way to
communicate with the GUI interface on computers
and the mouse was the perfect solution. The mouse
has gone through a few transformations through the
years but the general design is still the same.

Another famous invention that most of use each day
can be found in the cars that we drive: the
odometer. The first concept of the odometer was
invented in 15 BC by a Roman architect and
engineer by the name of Vitruvius. With continuing
modifications by Samuel McKeen in 1854 the
odometer is now used worldwide to measure the
distance that we drive.

Many inventions have been developed over that
years that are more fun that life altering. The Ferris
Wheel is a perfect example of this. George W.
Ferris, a famous bridge builder, invented the first
Ferris Wheel in 1893 when he was commissioned
by the World~s Fair being held in Chicago to
construct a structure.

If you~re looking for another fun amusement park
ride you need to look no further than the
rollercoaster. John Miller invented this fun ride in
1926, naming it the ~Flying Turns~. There are
many amusement parks all over the world that
feature the rollercoaster and the Ferris Wheel as big
ride attractions.

Medical inventions are some of the most important
inventions that we have since they have been
developed to help save lives. One example of this
is the cardiac pacemaker, which is used worldwide
for patients with heart problems. The pacemaker
was invented in 1941 by a man named John Hopps.
Through the years the pacemaker has had further
advancements and is used daily to allow heart
patients to live safely.

Another medical invention that is used extensively
today is the heart-lung machine, which makes heart
surgery safer. This ensures that heart patients have
a better chance of surviving surgery and makes the
recovery time shorter. The heart-lung machine was
invented by John Heysham Gibbon in 1937.

If you have an invention that you think will change
the world you~ll need to follow a patenting
procedure so that you make sure you~re the one
credited with the invention. In the meantime
inventions will continue being developed every day
in the fields of science, the humanities, and
medicine.
