Choosing A Name For Your Baby
by Sally Anders-Forster

When I was pregnant with my first baby, my husband and I
spent hours poring over baby name books to choose just
the right name. We wanted a name that was meaningful, one
that wouldn't give other kids a handle for jokes, a name
that was pretty and a little old-fashioned but not out of
date. I had my own criteria as well. Having grown up with
THE popular name of my generation, I didn't want my little
girl to be one of six Debbie~s in her first grade class.

And it's not just important to parents! One of the first
questions a new mother-to-be will be asked - and asked, and
asked throughout her pregnancy is 'Have you picked a name
yet?' People devote hours and hours of conversation and
research into picking just the right name for their new
precious bundle of joy-to-become, and with good reason.

My own criteria for choosing a baby name is a little bit
different - and a bit more practical. Since I'm going to
have to say that name literally millions of times over the
next 18 years, it's darn well going to be a name that I like
to say. That may be tongue-in-cheek (a little, anyway) but
there's a lot of truth to it. I've actually had neighbors
tell me that they love to listen to me call my children in
from play because it's like a song.

When choosing a name for your baby, one of the most
important considerations should be how it sounds. A name
that's easy to pronounce and pretty to say is far less
likely to become a nickname you can't stand. Some other
things to take into consideration when choosing a name that
you're baby will grow up loving are:

There should only be one requirement for the name you pick
for your new baby: that you love it. Aside from that, there
are many ways that people choose names for their children.
If you're having trouble deciding, you can always try one
of these methods:

1. Resist the temptation to be 'cutesy'. A name like Rose
Budd is guaranteed to become a joke at some point.

3. The same holds true when you choose a name for its
meaning. What little girl wouldn't be thrilled to know that
you picked her name because it means 'strong and graceful'
and that's just what she is?

3. Name the baby after someone you admire. In some cultures
it's traditional to name a child for a relative. Others
consider it bad luck to name a new baby after a living
relative. Giving a baby the name of someone you admire is
a way of wishing all those qualities you loved for your
new child.

Bonus Tip: If you have a meaning in mind for your child's
name, but can't find a name that you like to fit it, skip
the baby name books and hit Babelfish.com or another
internet translation site. Enter your meaning, and have it
translated into other languages until you find one that you
like.

The key to choosing a name that your baby will grow up to
love is to follow two basic rules: pick a name that you
love, and be sure that your child grows up knowing just how
special their name is.
